Science fiction and fantasy, on the other hand, are driven by the aesthetic. Without red herrings and unveiling the murderer, it’s not a murder mystery. Without a meet/cute and happily ever after, it’s not really a romance. ![]() Structure-driven genres are things like mysteries, thrillers, and romances. I think that genres divide into two major types: structure-driven genres and aesthetic-driven genres. It turns out that these two genres play really well together. ![]() But I also have a deep love for mystery as well. My home genre is science fiction because it allows me to tip the natural world to the side to expose the interconnected tissue. One of my favorite things, as an author, is to play with structure. ![]()
